  A word of advice on 'hacking' / 'cracking' / 'gaining r00t'. 

  In case you didn't know already, 'hacking' or more appropriately 
  'cracking' computer systems -- for the most part -- requires 
  a machine running Unix, or a variation thereof (that loosely 
  being an OS with POSIX standards compliance).

  Unix-type / '*nix' systems provide a standardized environment 
  that is highly conducive to programming, and working with sockets.

  Whether you're a phreaker playing your way through some unauthorized 
  packet hops onto the internet, or you're a hacker working right 
  from the physical tty/console of the attacking computer...

      you're USING UNIX OR SOME VARIATION THEREOF and/or 
      connected to a remote shell USING UNIX OR SOME VARIATION  
      THEREOF

  On Windows systems, you are somewhat limited to toying around 
  with script kiddie -type applications (which may provide a fair 
  amount of fun for a time), and may, quite possibly, become 
  a script kiddie yourself.
